FOREWORD BY BEPPE GABBIANI, F1 driver of the 80s
Crazy Racers’ is a book of rupture, a cry of rebellion against the tame, bland, unbearably politically correct and almost all identical interviews that are typical of Formula One today.
Once again, Mario Donnini, journalist and long-standing Autosprint contributor, has collected these unusual, curious stories, some verging on the unbelievable. He has compiled the testimonies of a series of “authentic madmen”, who have lived the Formula One experience or have perhaps just been brushed by it, only to end up somewhere else.
In this new book we come across the punk-rock engineer Gordon Murray who reveals himself as he never did before, or Bruno Giacomelli, who tells how and why he chose in 1990 to drive the Life, the slowest F1 car in history. Then there are genuinely fabulous characters like Val Musetti, a F1 driver who competed against Gilles Villeneuve and Mario Andretti in the 1979 Race of Champions and was then a stuntman and stunt double in “Alien”. And what about the Mexican Giovanni Aloi who, out of disappointment at having missed out on the chance to race the Lambo F1 car, became a bullfighter; or Quique Mansilla, who was attacked by Senna in Formula Ford, tested the McLaren F1 car and then became a… gold prospector.
These and others, together with the legend of James Dean, make up a series of unforgettable encounters-cum-portraits that help detoxify the blatant mediocrity of modern racing. All assisted by the wonderful extreme drawings of Giorgio Serra aka ‘Matitaccia’.
