The victory of Sandro Munari and Mario Mannucci with the Lancia Fulvia Coupé HF 1.6 at the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally made rallies very popular in our country too. Many young people have approached the specialty, which in the meantime has become increasingly professional, with official teams involved in the world championship. Among these also Lancia and Fiat, which recruited the best specialists.
However, it was not easy to get noticed to reach professionalism. High costs limited quality participation to a few pilots. To increase the number of possible future champions, Cesare Fiorio had an intuition: to create a single-make championship with an affordable car. The first Autobianchi A112 Abarth 70 HP championship was born in 1977. It was an immediate success and in the following years many others were born from these single-brand championships.
This book tells the story of the three main single-brand trophies featuring small cars from the then Fiat group: the Autobianchi A112 Abarth 70HP, the Fiat Uno 70 and Fiat Uno Turbo, and the Fiat Cinquecento. In this volume the author Gian dell’Erba – who personally followed many of these championships as a press officer – wanted to report the history of the individual seasons by contextualizing them in other international championships. He then recounted the careers of the champions who emerged from these championships.
The whole illustrated by hundreds of very spectacular photographs, because behind it all there was so much competition and so much spectacle in the special tests. Spectators and the many drivers remember it.
