In the history of the motorcycle, the 1910s and ’20s were particularly important. The vehicle evolved and lost its links to the early bicycles simply fitted with an engine. Power units became more potent and the frames and suspension systems were uprated to cope. The rider’s posture changed as a more streamlined position was adopted. In terms of styling, the fuel tank hung from upper frame tubes was known as the “underslung” configuration. British bikes enjoyed a preeminent position on the market: there were dozens of marques, among them names that were to earn a place in history: BSA, Triumph, Norton, Matchless, AJS, Sunbeam, Rudge, Scott and Velocette. Not to seak of the most alluring of all, the Brough Superior which not coincidently was the machine ridden by Lawrence of Arabia.
