Very few bikes have made such an impact on the two-wheeled world as the Kawasaki 500. Launched in 1969, at the same time as the Honda 750, together with its four-cylinder rival it gave rise to the “big bang” of superbikes in the 1970s. The Mach III did this and more despite not a big bike, but riding as if it were one, accelerating harder than even bikes with twice its displacement thanks to its remarkably potent two-stroke triple, a configuration hitherto only found on Grand Prix machines. While the engine proved to be a barrel of dynamite, the same could hardly be said of the chassis, which struggled to harness all those horses.
