It is known to many that on 16 December 1945 the Mergellina Cup is held in Naples, the first Italian car race of the second post-war period. Instead, a small group of enthusiasts know that on March 3, 1946, again in Campania, the second race takes place, the Atrani-Ravello time trial. Starting from these two dates, the volume offers a detailed map of the car competitions held in Campania up to the 1960s. They are all races on road, circuit, uphill and regularity routes, where the most established champions such as Ascari, Farina, Fangio, Moss are flanked by local drivers less known to the general public, such as Ruggiero, Sorrentino, Fiordelisi, Moselli . Similarly to the immortal car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, local craftsmen work side by side including Paganelli, the Esposito brothers, Monaci. Shortly before the seventies, the cycle of competitions begins to gradually fade away. With the limitations due to the issue of safety, road routes are no longer fit for purpose. Drivers and enthusiasts will be forced to move further and further away from Vesuvius and the artisans will disappear permanently. With the help of over 600 shots by Riccardo Carbone, legendary Neapolitan photographer, Massimo Nobile tells the golden years of the bell races, highlighting, in addition to the actors even the most unknown, the magnificent scenarios where these took place, images that will remain unique in the panorama of Italian sports motorsport.
